Optometrical Practice Management Newsletter - Tips & Reviews. Volume 12. December 2007

Management & Business Academy DAY 2

Last month Day 2 of the MBA for Eye Care Professionals was held at the beautiful Chowder Bay in Sydney. Once again CibaVision generously invested in the development of Optometry.

If you didn't read the summary of Day 1, go to the October Newsletter for the write up before you read on.

Day 1 concentrated on Leadership, which is the foundation to business excellence. Once we have great leadership, we then need tight business principles to bring things together.

Day 2 was broken up into 3 main tracks:

Track 1 was about measuring performance, which is one of the cornerstones of business. How many of us actually create a budget and measure actual performance against predicted?

Not many of the participants did this and I imagine this would also apply to the rest of the profession. Most businesses wait for tax returns to be completed by their accountant to gauge how they are going. In many cases this can be up to 18 months after the transactions have occured. Clearly this is too late.

Marketing and positioning your business was Track 2. This involved creation of a practice brochure, updating your website, surveying customer satisfaction etc.

Track 3 involved a SWOT analysis, staff meeting protocol, a procedure manual and the analysis of "Influence Points" in our respective businesses. Influence points throughout the patient journey are many. They can be broken up into three sections:

  1. Pre-Visit - Recall mailing, appointment telephone call and appointment reminder call.
  2. Practice Visit - Parking , Reception greeting, History/ Lifestyle questions, Pre-testing, Consultation, etc.
  3. Post-Visit - Product pick up, Internet, Newsletters, complaint resolution, replacement contact lens orders, etc.

Each one of these "Influence Points" can make or break the customer's experience. It was clear that attention to detail is required in each area to guarantee success.

A more detailed report will be published in the February 2008 edition of MiVision.

Day 3 of the MBA course will be in early February and a short summary will be in the March newsletter.

We Wish you a Merry Xmas & a Great 2008!

I would like to conclude this month's newsletter by wishing all readers a Merry Xmas and a Prosperous and Healthy New Year.

Last but not least I would like to thank Rodenstock for two years of sponsorship. This has allowed the newsletter to be sent every month. Rodenstock will not be sponsoring the newsletter as of next year, so I have decided to slow down a little and send a newsletter every quarter instead.

The next newsletter will be in March 2008. We will continue with business tips, product reviews and therapeutic discussions by world class ophthalmic surgeons. Sincere thanks to Dr Anthony Maloof, Dr Gerard Sutton and Dr Andrew Chang, who will keep us up to date with the latest and greatest in medical eyecare.

Information Technology & Optometry

If you want to invest in new technology you must have a solid computer system to make sure that the use of the technology is efficient. Having a solid computer network for an optometry practice is way beyond the average optometrist's skill set. That's where Richard Rees comes in.
